Printers - and printing on card

A friend has asked my advice as he is upgrading his system and is considering a new printer to replace his 10 year old Goliath.

I have found a few possibilities via Amazon but he has specifically asked for ones which print onto card - his disabled wife makes greetings cards as a hobby.

But all the sites I have gone to - even the manufacturers - don't seem to list this in the product specification.

I believe he would have no problems with any of the machines I found (HP, Epson) but would welcome any feedback from other ABers. He mentiond 250gsm card as a minimum

I have always printed on card with all my Epsons, I think all printers will do that as standard, they have special settings for different cards etc.
My Cannon prints on card through the envelope setting.
Most printers will print onto (reasonably) thin card, so you can more or less assume that any new one will.

The two main questions you need to ask are:

1) whether colour or B/W
2) A4, or larger

Chances are that colour will be required, but larger than A4 won't. I can thoroughly recommend this: Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
the consumables look a little pricey on that, Mark.
If you are intending to print on reasonably heavy card it is better to go for a printer that has a straight pass-through. Avoid ones like HP that wrap the paper round rollers.
If you get them directly from HP, maybe...
I also make greeting cards and print onto card. I have a Canon Pixma MP600R, it handles card with no problems at all, it also has the benefit that the ink cartridges are individual colours so that if you print a lot with one colour, you only need to replace that cartridge. I think this also works out less expensive compared to other systems. My model is also wireless, so can have it in my craft room, but some distance away from the pc which saves room on my work desk.

Thank you all for the input.

I have done him a little chart with Amazons 'best buys' and let him choose

MarkRae - I think he will go more for a £70 than a £170 one. Yes he wants colour and I would think maximum A4

HowardKennitby - a good point about the 'straight through' option. Worth a mention methinks.

Jules001 - looked for that model but it doesnt appear to be available - only the refills. Will look at Pixma range.
