hd tv and tivo box

i have a samsung hd tv and virgin tivo box. the tv gives out a noisy scratching sound but not all the time. i have a top brand hdmi lead and scart lead. how can i tell if its a problem with the tv or the tivo box

Can't you just disconnect the Tivo from the TV and put the tv on Freeview to see if you get the noise.

Try substituting the HDMI for a fully wired scart lead to test ..
also .. make sure the audio settings in the TV menu (Tivo AV input) is set to Digital .. when using HDMI .. and Analogue when using Scart.
