My laptop is barely 2 years old, and its now making a whirring noise, which is barable(unsure spelling) in a wi-fi bar, but a lot noisier at home when watching as film.
should i expect a costly repair?

Is it overheating?
The fan over heating?
Depends on the cause. Chances are it may just be a fan that needs cleaning. Good idea to find out the cause though.

overheating after 10 minutes?
It's probably the fan.
Clear all the air vents using a small brush and a vacuum cleaner.
And, of course, don't put it on your lap or any other soft surface that's likely to block the vents.
"overheating after 10 minutes? "
Not overheating, just getting hot enough for the fan to kick in.

og, i´m going to hopefully get a mate to look at it on thursday.
just a thought, class olsen sell a flat device a laptop will rest on with a couple of built in usb driven fans inside
Why are you getting a mate to look at it...............turn it over and clean the fan vent.
get an air duster...can of pressurised air to blow the dust out, then do as rojash says

you can also buy little stands with a fan in, to sit your laptop on, to keep it cool from poundshops
its the fan overheating you need to make sure u have the laptop on a hrd surface when ure using it
Mine is always on a hard surface but it still overheats.
Interesting to see that some of the suggestions for getting rid of the irritating noise from the fan involve the use of one or two additional fans.
rojash...what do you suggest for the noise then? earplugs?

given that the noisy fan may be noisy because its working over time, and is probably clogged...adding a silent extra fan would make it have to work less hard and cannot damage the laptop at all...understand?

deal with the cause not the symptom.

piggy - mine began turning itself off whenever i watched a film...presumably working too hard...i cleaned the fans etc and its fine now.

The fan on a modern laptop is temperature-controlled, just like the cooling fan in a car. It will only come on when the temperature rises to a set point. If you ensure decent airflow round the heatsink, as per my earlier suggestion, it may not come on at all.
Could the ambient temperature have something to do with it too? It's been very warm for the past week, perhaps the fan is sucking in air that is already in the high 20 degrees C. range
yes rojash i know that...thats why a raised stand with a silent fan to allow airflow and also blow cool air onto it might help the laptop fan not need to come on at all or at least not very often...!

thereby stopping the noise and stopping it overheating...

sorry, not sure of any other way i can say it to make it clearer to you...
If the air vents are clear and the laptop is on a firm surface, it shouldn't need any addition help with the airflow.

sorry, not sure of any other way i can say it to make it clearer to you...
