AVG is highly recommended as a "Free" virus scanner, the paid for scanners are probably better!
Free or not, AVG is very good - way better than Norton which I paid for once.

...and AVG do a "paid-for" version of the free one.
If you do internet banking, your bank/ building society may give you a security package (costing £40 or £50) for nothing. Worth asking them! Barclays give you the Kaspersky Security Suite free, for example.
The free AVG is only a basic antivirus. It's good, but that is all you get. If you pay, you get a firewall and all sorts of other protection included.
AVG was on my PC when I bought it because the shop tekkies build it into every PC they make, which i thought was a pretty good recomendation.

I surf a serious amount, and have not had any issues with AVG - i think programmes like MacAfee are expensive and take up space doing what AVG does with very little space and no cost.

The answer is - if people will buy a protection package, other people will make one. i could have a Rolls to drive to work, but my Fiat does the job just as well on the same roads, for a lot less cost. Simples.
I have used 'AVG free' for about 10 years with no problems.
The current version of AVG is actually not very good. It's klunky and overblown.
The latest version of Norton is excellent.
If you want FREE security for Windows 7, then I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, which has a much lighter footprint than AVG.

Thanks for replies .Very helpful info
All AVG give away is the Anti-Virus part.

They do sell a full featured internet security product.

I think they give away a free part of their product hoping you will then go and buy the full featured product.

Also by giving away a free part of their product they get lots of people saying "I have got AVG" which is good free publicity.

But note anti virus is just one part of PC security and if you JUST run an anti virus product you are leaving yourself wide open to all sorts of other attacks (malware, spyware etc)

Thank you VHG that is exactly what I wanted to hear. Just could not understand why it was free when there are lots of companies out there selling security.
