Oh - to the modem!

Were you originally with Telewest or NTL?

If it were Telewest your service provider id is the strange number and letter sequence they sent you when you first joined. You can find it by logging in to self care here:

Then click 'email and dial up'.

The first in the list is your service provider id - click on it and you can change the password if you have forgotten.

You may also need the original set up cd Telewest sent you.

...I may just be a case of registering the computer

you could have upto 5 computers registered on NTL but now virgin only allow one computer i think
without a router you will have to register the computer you have plugged in

first you need to make sure you have installed the CD software that came with the modem with it being USB it will not be plug and play without virgin driver CD

once you have completed that
open up internet explore or your internet browser and it should take you to the registration page at virgin
if not type in this

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/activation/sta rt/

you will need to documentation that you first used to register your first ever computer when the modem was installed way back
