Slow Pc Speed After Upgrade To Fibre

Hi all, hoping someone can help please.

Yesterday I upgraded to Fibre broadband. Downstairs by the hub I'm getting download speeds of nearly 40mbps and upload of nearly 10mbps.
Upstairs on my mobile I'm get not far from that. But my home PC is behaving like a dog and I'm only getting about 1mbps download speed! And the little signal strength in the bottom-right corner is only showing one bar.
I've had problems in the past due to having Avast anti-virus installed, on disabling the web shield I was getting similar speeds (5mbps) to downstairs pre-fibre.
I am not sure why I'm getting rubbish speeds on my PC, it's obviously not the connection as that's fine on other devices. I have uninstalled Avast completely but that hasn't helped.
PC Wi-Fi adapter is a Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn.

Many thanks.

Roger....if you are now on Fibre BB, than you should be getting far in excess of 40mps. I get 45-50 and I am only on Fibre-to-the-cabinet.

As regards the different speeds around the house, again, they should be pretty constant everywhere.

Did you get a new router when, presumably Virgin, upgraded you to Fibre ?
I am with Virgin and latest check shows download 161 and upload 10.17
Clearly the wireless connection has issues. Have you rebooted both router and PC to reset and reconnect ?

mikey4444 - It's actually Sky not Virgin and I got a new hub yes.
Old_Geezer - Have rebooted both. Am thinking it's a problem with the PC rather than the connection as connecting via other devices is fine (and fast).
Had exactly the same problem with the update to Sky fibre. A little adjustment to the two little ariel receivers at the back of the tower sorted it.
Resetting the TCP/IP stack on your PC might be all that you need to do. (It's dead easy). Which version of Windows are you using?
I have been thinking about this. To my best knowledge, Sky does not provide "fibre to the house" but relies on the BT phone line, to provide the connection. And it can only do that, if your telephone line has "fibre to the cabinet"

Virgin is the only ISP, that will provide you with its own fibre, without involving BT in any way... I may have that wrong !

But your problem would still appear to lie within your property, and its Router.

Please let us know what you find out....we love feedback here on AB, and it will help other people as well !

Hi all, a quick update for you...
I moved my PC downstairs (it's an all-in-one so no big deal) and did a speed test. Got nearly 30mbps download. Then moved it to the top of the stairs and got about 10mbps download. Concluded from this it's my distance from the hub that's causing the poor speeds.
However, since Friday I've been getting about 8-10mbps on the upstairs PC so maybe the connection has just taken time to stabilise? It's not as fast as I'd hoped so I may invest in a Wi-Fi extender to boost the signal further.
Thanks.
Sounds good.

Maybe it was needing to try multiple times to get the data ?

Can you, perhaps, use the mains wiring to bypass any need for the wireless connection ?
OG is referring to plugs similar to these

Other makes and retailers are available. They are faster and more secure than wifi
