I'll be on the road before anyone answers but ...

It must be connected to Win 10 update this morning, but I've just noticed that the above icon isn't showing. A Net search shows advice about clicking on non-existent up arrows in the toolbox.

I'm going to have to eject the flash drive from Explorer, but does anyone have a suggestion on bringing the wandering icon back ?

TIA

Correction, I shall have to just pull it out as, on trying an eject, it is saying it has things open when it clearly does not.

I'm getting lost but remember that . . . 1. As long as 'Quick Removal' is selected as the removal policy (which it is by default anyway) then, as long as no data is actually being transferred to or from the USB drive when you unplug it, it's perfectly safe to simply pull it out (without bothering with 'Safely Remove Hardware') anyway ; and 2. Ah I found my way to notifications and actions before I posted. Have to say I missed the links to elsewhere, merely looked across the icons shown, and the list below. Not user friendly/obvious IMO.

I'll give it a go when I get back. Thanks.

Ah I see one problem. The page is ticked for "Always show all icons" ! But it's still missing. In fact it isn't one of those listed below, so I couldn't independently turn it on even if I wanted to.

Anyone any further suggestions ? Cheers.

However you could still try this:

Copy this line of text:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Right-click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut

Where it asks you to 'Type location of the item', right-click and paste that line of text in.

Click Next.

Name the shorcut something like 'Safe Removal'

Click Finish

You'll then have a desktop shortcut which does the same job as your missing icon.

I'm unsure where the removal policy is but it hasn't been (intentionally) changed. The PC is turned off once every 33 blue moons (on average).

But I'll try the new icon suggestion; thanks muchly.

Astoundingly, when, what I think must have been due to the BT network issues, I recently restarted the PC to see if I could improve the connection to AB, the icon finally reappeared again !
