Can the younger generation no longer use a telephone? I heard recently that my sister who lives 25 miles away had a heart attack, how did I hear? my daughter who lives in Scotland emailed me to say she had seen it on facebook, it may have its uses but facebook is no way to pass on urgent or personal news.

I agree that's no way to convey such news - FB is ideal for chatting and socialising but not that.

Sorry to hear about your sister.x
However it is ironic that you vent your spleen on a chat site.......
Was the person who posted on Facebook actually seeking to notify family members? Someone who knows your sister (either online or face-to-face) won't necessarily know who her family members are or have any idea how to get in touch with any of you. They could simply have heard that your sister had been taken ill and expressed their concerns about her on Facebook, with your daughter seeing that comment.
I'm not a fan of Facebook either.
I recently heard bad news via FB. I suppose it's easier to post there rather than find out everyone's phone number to tell them individually. It's the way it is now, it seems.
Sorry about your sister. I hope she is ok.
I don't want to add to your woes but I'd also have been a bit cross my daughter emailed me the news and did't telephone.
But surely, without FaceBook, you wouldn't have known at all?
>>> I'd also have been a bit cross my daughter emailed me the news and didn't telephone

Perhaps, Mamyalynne, Biccylova's daughter assumed that her mother already had the news and simply emailed to say "I was sorry to read about Aunty"?
You are correct, I retract - sorry.
They probably did use a phone - but as a computer not a phone!

I won't even have Facebook or Twitter on my computer or ipad!
I alerted someone to bad news through Facebook because another post indicated that he had heard the news. He hadn't, But had ignored various phone calls and text messages from the family and when I posted 'Sad news thinking of you' he immediately contacted his family for which they were grateful for my interference.
I think I can top most of the posts - I recently found out early one morning that a close cousin ( in Canada) had died 3 days earlier, this was 2 weeks ago. When I mentioned it to another cousin I got an apology, saying she should have kept me informed as to his declining condition. I was "gobsmacked" to say the leats.

My sister had three stents put in her heart but is ok now. It would only have taken two phone calls to let me and my other sister know, yes my daughter did think that I already knew, and "venting my spleen" on answerbank is not the same thing at all, I just felt like screaming at someone, sorry, thanks for your answers.
Glad that your sister is ok. I can understand your frustration at learning the news in this way but just wanted to say that Facebook can be useful. My husband was recently rushed to hospital with meningitis and I spent most of the first few days there with him until he started to respond to the antibiotics. Managed to telephone two members of his immediate family who spread the word. During those first few days friends were 'phoning with kind enquiries and offers of help but I was not at home to reply to them all so I found it useful to be able to update everyone on his progress via Facebook after the first week and later to let everyone know when he was finally discharged from hospital.
I don't like it either. Email works
I find people are inconsiderate. I found out my grandad had died on Facebook. He died at 1am and I found out when I turned the computer on the next morning.

My cousin must have known that the family couldn't have been informed when she posted it.
That's terrible, ummmm. There's no excuse for not phoning you before posting on FB there.
