It depends on her settings. I have my Facebook so that nobody who is not in my 'friends' list can message me.

If her settings aren't so stringent you can certainly send a private message. Click on your friend's name and you should see two buttons - click the 'send message' button and you will send a private message.

When I click on message box, i get message "You and XXX aren't connected on facebook" Does this matter???
No,send the message

Thanks, hc!
She might not get the message though. If you are unconnected, I think the message goes into the 'other' mailbox. I don't think you get notifications when one drops in there.

Booger Rocky!! Is there a way around this??? Shall I request her as a friend using my son's profile?
Why not create your own profile?

It looks like I am gonna have to!!!
That would be the best way to go. If she knew you as your maiden name (sorry to make assumptions about marital status), make sure you double barrel or she might not know who you are.

Thanks all.
Just seen this Shazza...if you do join FB, I'll be a friend...only if you want though, no pressure ;)
