Maybe you have the keyboard set at a different language ?
Question Author
maybe how do I change it
yes..that is what I was thinking...if you swipe in from right to settings and touch on keyboard it allows a language change
Yes you need to select "United Kingdom" keyboard. Do you get the £ sign when you do "shift 3"? If not that's prob because you have US keyboard or something else

ni get # Im thick you will have to tell me exactly what to do step by step please
On the bottom of your screen, on the right you should have a miniature keyboard symbol. Hover over it, or click it and you will see what language options there are. Choose UK English
if touch screen as I said above
if you right-click on the bottom left corner of the screen a menu will appear that includes the Control Panel, and choosing that beings up the system settings amongst which there is the group for Clock, Language and Region
Did you have to do a Windows setup when you first turned on the PC?

If so my guess is that you let the default keyboard get set to USA keyboard and not UK English as others have said.

Always pay attention to all the options when doing a Windows setup.

Of course if Windows was already setup when you got it blame the person who set up Windows, maybe the shop.

Good luck fudgefudge...I was lost when I 1st got my Windows 8.1 but I was given loads of help with it on here! I still don't like it though ;)
I hated windows 8 to start with. A few changes, apps and re-jigs later...no problems.
Stick with it :-)
When you first started in when you got and set it up for the first time did you set the country of origin as UK .Here is an article that will allow you to check the layout and change it if it is incorrect.
