Which phone is it? On mine there is an option "storage sense" and that gives you the option to uninstall most apps.
If the Facebook app came pre-installed on your phone then you won't be able to remove it unless you root your phone (which removes the restrictions placed on the operating system by the manufacturer). It's a safe enough process but it will almost certainly invalidate your warranty:

thanks chris
Aye, I have a number of apps I'd like to remove as they aren't used, but they tend to be the ones Google insist I have to have. I suspect I might root the phone when the warranty ends. I don't trust being able to unroot it should a problem come along before then.
Note the phone maker, like say Samsung, may also add apps to the phone and often these cant be uninstalled.

In fact I gather Google (who make Android) are annoyed at Samsung for adding extra apps on top of Android, often ones which duplicate function already in Android.
