recently broadband speed has reduced.Tried the line- no probs- Rang ISP (BT)

went through the problem couldnt find any reason for it EXCEPT when taking off front plate of bt socket & using test point inside Cant get any broadband & hub light stays off. BT will come out but if the problem is not theirs they will charge £99 + vat.I cant see it being other than the BT socket but dont want to take a chance Anybody any ideas? Thanks in advance

Reduced speed with the NTE5 faceplate on and no broadband with it off makes no sense.

Do you know the history of the phone installation in the property? because the only way I can see that happening is the socket has been wired in a really screwy way.
