I am with plus net and it is so slow, I reported it and they did tests and it is no better, they say it is because I an on a telephone extension, ( I cant use the main one as it is in the hallway near the front door, there is no room) and also that I turn all computer electrics off when not in use) They say that doing this slows it down. what do you think ?Speed check showed less than 1 megabyte a second.

You could put just the router in the hall and either connect wirelessly or run an ethernet cable from the router to the computer.

Continually turning off the router will slow it down. Every time you turn the router on it spends some time (anything up to a few days) optimising your connection. Every time you turn it off, it forgets all that and has to start...

Continually turning off the router will slow it down. Every time you turn the router on it spends some time (anything up to a few days) optimising your connection. Every time you turn it off, it forgets all that and has to start over. The whole point of a router is to provide an "always on" connection.
A couple of questions:-
1). Is this a new problem or have you had faster internet speeds with the exact same set up in the past?
2). Can you, just as a temporary measure, move your router to the master socket in the hall and check your download speed again? This will tell you if your extension wiring is at fault. (Ideally, you should remove the front of the master socket and connect directly into the test socket.)

It has always been quite slow.
I only have one telephone point and apparantly it is not a test one they have tested this once and they said it was fine

What does that entail ?
1 MegaBYTE per second is fast. You must mean 1 megaBIT per second.
as rojash says and plusnet says too always leave your router on it uses very very little power and use an Ethernet cable from your phone point to your router not a telephone extension cable
I've done that with mine I'm with plus net and pulling 12mb's download. though i'm around 10 min walk from the exchange
