Desk top logos

My computer works perfectly until I close my BT Yahoo home page and then immediately open it again. All the logos on my desktop either appear just as blank squares and never work. The only way that I can get them to function is to log off and then log back on. I keep getting a message just as the computer is shutting down about another programme that needs shutting down but it is not on the screen long enough for me to read it properly or to take action. I nearly always get a message after logging on that my previous browsing session closed unexpectedly and am given the option of cancelling or restoring - neither option works. I am using win dows 7 home premium. I supppose the real answer is not to close my home page but there must be something wrong. Any guidance would be welcome
