Kicking and screaming...

Have finally lost patience with IE (this evening 'IE is not responding' and/or very slow). Maybe because I've just installed a new program? Anyway, I know I should have changed months ago, but would you now advise Google Chrome or Firefox? Domestic use only. And I presume I have to use IE in order to download either? I'm with BT and using Windows 7. Thanks.

I have never used Chrome so can't comment. I use FF11 at the moment and have no problems. There does appear to be some odd things with FF12 that still need to be fixed so I have not upgraded.
I still use IE as a default but to be honest, Firefox are more reliable. If I have to do anything where it`s important that I don`t "time out" such as booking tickets etc, I always use Firefox. You can have adblockers on them as well. I did download Chrome but I`ve never had cause to use it.
I use Chrome for everything other than cross-browser testing. There is an ad blocker available too. It's the fastest browser I've ever used because it has none of the bloat of IE and other browsers...

Just installed Google Chrome. By golly, it's fast! Thanks for advice.
We don't have any trouble with IE9....
You need to check your addons and see if any are rogue ones which you can delete and disable the ones that are taking too long to load. Also make sure that you are using software accelleration and not hardware if you dont have a graphics card installed and are using the onboard graphics.

Not sure I understand the second part of your answer, galeck, but hanks for the first hint. Thanks also Boxtops; I've been holding off installing IE9 because of the problems I've been having recently with IE8, and for the moment I'm going to find my way round Chrome which seems to be fine. I actually think much of the problem lies with BT as the connection keeps dropping. Think they're trying to get me to upgrade to Infinity, but as I said to them on the phone why would I want to pay more to a company that won't provide the service I'm paying for in the first place?
Many thanks to everyone for useful advice.
Imo BT are crap ... I should know, I worked over 20 yrs for them! :)
