When I connect to the internet it says I'm connected at 6.9 mbps. This varies up to 7.2 mbps. However, when I download I only get speeds of 0.57 mbps and this speed has been checked and confirmed using an internet speed test program. My computer is brand new with top specifications. Can I speed up things? Thank you in advance

He has not mentioned upload speed so why are people mentioning it.

He says a speed test program shows download at 7.2mbps but he actually gets download of 0.57mbps.

Of course it depends what you are downloading from where.

If you are downloading a torrent from another computer then you will only get the speed THAT computer can upload the file, it...

That's normal (in fact .57 is pretty good for ADSL)

The A in ADSL stands for asymmetric, which means one way is faster than the other

i thought the first speed was download and second was upload , i have just checked mine
10-01 download and 0-268 upload,

If it's a 2Mb/s circuit the figures would be a miracle!
I'm getting 11.94 and 0.911 here

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

12.45 and 0.95 here

http://speedtest.net/

12.342 and 0.946 here

I have no idea which is most accurate (though all the results are pretty good)

If you are downloading a torrent from another computer then you will only get the speed THAT computer can upload the file, it does not matter what download speed you have.

So anything you download can only be downladed as fast as the sender can send it.

Thanks guys. It's a BT landline I have so it seems I'm doing pretty good according to your answers
Just did the test
32.77 mb/s download
3.16 mb/s upload
is this good for BT infinity?
I get 68.23Mbps (slow for me) download and 8.90Mbps upload with a ping of 18 ms. This is with Virgin Media cable up to 100Mbps package. If I actually download anything (music, films etc.) the download speed I get depends on the site I am downloading from.

:)
