I am thinking of changing my internet provider. I am with Virgin and have been for about 5 yrs, is there likely to be a cancellation charge for a contract ??

Read the contract, but unlikely - max contract seems to be two years, many are less.
If I had been with a virgin for 5 years I would count it a catastrophic failure on my part.

I want to upgrade but Virgin will not let me on line, I tried phoning, at great expense, and after talking to a female who couldn't help me I gave up !!!
from what mike says, sounds like your wrapping is still intact and therefore your contract has not been consummated, certainly in the eyes of Rome.
Phone them up and ask them. It might be on a renewable annual contract, so you'll need to know when it was renewed.
Or it may be on a month's notice.
Anyway, when you tell them you want to cancel, you will be put through to another department where you will get a very good offer to stay with them.

Have you got a BT phone line?
