Cable question !!!

Hi !

Ok.... I would like to have my PS3 games console sound going through my home cinema surround system (Panasonic SA-HT855) instead of the tv (Panasonic Viera TH-42PX60B) as I'd like the bass and surround whilst playing games.

I've tried just connecting the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the back of the cinema system but that didn't work and I've tried connecting with the red/white jacks to the back of the cinema system also (running from the audio out at the back of the PS3)

Is there something I'm not doing right or do I have the wrong cable ?

Many thanks (in advance!)
Lisa

The right thing to do is use an optical cable yes, as this type of cable is bascially sending light the only difference a good cable is going to make is its going to be thicker and therefore harder for any small creatures to eat through(should you own any pets) or for you to break, i would say spend no more than 10-20 quid on it.

Connecting it is the easy part,...

Hi Lisa ..
There are a few possibilities with your amp .. but you can determine probably by looking here first. The HDMI will carry video and sound to the amp.
Is there an HDMI out on the amp? Read here first .. you might be a bit wiser afterwards!

If you have Optical OUT on the PS3, and an optical IN on the AV Amplifier .. connect an Optical lead to to get your sound to the amp.

I've just noticed I have an optical input at the back of my home cinema and Optical out on the back of the PS3...... shall I just get an Optical cable... any good recommendations for what I need please?

Thanks again :)
The right thing to do is use an optical cable yes, as this type of cable is bascially sending light the only difference a good cable is going to make is its going to be thicker and therefore harder for any small creatures to eat through(should you own any pets) or for you to break, i would say spend no more than 10-20 quid on it.

Connecting it is the easy part, making it work is slightly harder than just plugging it in.
Once you have the cable plug one end to the playstation, it does NOT matter which way round the cable is it sends info both ways, you may find when you plug one end in that a red light shines out the other end(dont worry if it doesn't), the other end goes to you ht855.
Now you need to change your sound settings on the ps3 so that it uses the correct cable for sending the info, once your console has turned on sign in and go to the settings area (2nd in from the far left, users should be 1st tab then settings the 2nd) now you need to go down to the 4th option from the bottom of the settings which is sound settings, open this up and you will see 3 choices come up, the one you want should already be highlighted, its the top option(audio output settings) selecting this will bring up a further 3 options:
HDMI
Optical digital
Av scart etc.
You want to choose the middle option optical digital, a list will now appear giving the options of the type of sound data you want sent through the cable, there should be 7 options in total the top 2 of which you should tick as useable, i have the 4th and 7th box ticked as well but i never changed them from the default. (perhaps try without 4 and 7 1st and see how it goes)), you may also get a warning saying if sound settings are incorrect it could damage your speakers, dont worry about the warning i think it only comes up if you select option 6)
Once these have been selected press the right arrow on your controller to move to the next screen where you will see confir
