The right thing to do is use an optical cable yes, as this type of cable is bascially sending light the only difference a good cable is going to make is its going to be thicker and therefore harder for any small creatures to eat through(should you own any pets) or for you to break, i would say spend no more than 10-20 quid on it.
Connecting it is the easy part, making it work is slightly harder than just plugging it in.
Once you have the cable plug one end to the playstation, it does NOT matter which way round the cable is it sends info both ways, you may find when you plug one end in that a red light shines out the other end(dont worry if it doesn't), the other end goes to you ht855.
Now you need to change your sound settings on the ps3 so that it uses the correct cable for sending the info, once your console has turned on sign in and go to the settings area (2nd in from the far left, users should be 1st tab then settings the 2nd) now you need to go down to the 4th option from the bottom of the settings which is sound settings, open this up and you will see 3 choices come up, the one you want should already be highlighted, its the top option(audio output settings) selecting this will bring up a further 3 options:
HDMI
Optical digital
Av scart etc.
You want to choose the middle option optical digital, a list will now appear giving the options of the type of sound data you want sent through the cable, there should be 7 options in total the top 2 of which you should tick as useable, i have the 4th and 7th box ticked as well but i never changed them from the default. (perhaps try without 4 and 7 1st and see how it goes)), you may also get a warning saying if sound settings are incorrect it could damage your speakers, dont worry about the warning i think it only comes up if you select option 6)
Once these have been selected press the right arrow on your controller to move to the next screen where you will see confir
