Hello cookiee69!
Depending on finances, I would look to the future and buy a good quality TV, preferably a 1080p HD ready one.
Also purchase a HD plus digibox from sky as more and more HD Channels will come on line.
Yes the cheapest option is a TV with in-built freeview as you can also get a Freeview plus box for recording onto it's hard drive.
You need to have a good think as to what you want for your future viewing. Have you already got a contract with Sky?
There is far more choice than freeview.

Hello.
I do have a contract with Sky, and I am a massive Sky plus fan. But I've have been without TV (and therefore Sky) since Xmas and so thought this might be a good opportunity to save money.
There's just me a my little girl, so I'm looking for ways to cut costs.
At the moment, High Definition is too much of a luxury, so I just wanted the cheapest way of getting Living, and E4 and some way of recording them.
the only alternative to Sky I know about is Freeview.
With finances being tight it certainly is a problem when purchasing products. Go with the freeview option and purchase a TV with inbuilt freeview and shop around for a bargain as retailers have plenty on offer, including the Supermarkets. Also get a Freview plus box for recording. There are TV packages to be had if you look on Curry's, Comet and other websites to see what they have on offer.
You will not have as many Channels to choose from as you had on sky but once you have made your purchase, you have not got Sky subscription to pay.
Some time in the future your finances may well improve, but go with Freeview for now as the cheaper option.

That's so helpful. my little girl goes to school in September, and I know I shouldn't wish my life away but YIPEE.
no nursery fees and much easier to do more paid work.
I hate giving up my Sky because I am in love with it - but needs must.
thanks for the Curry's idea. i will have a look.
Cheers
may be too late already but if you still want to be able to record a series at the touch of a button look for a freeview plus (freeview+) box, these give you the same recording features of sky without the subscription and you can get them quite cheap.
Look at TV listings in newspapers....they list freeview & Sky thru digi boxes.

Because of all the answers I went to Sky yesterday to cancel my subscription (and was going to get freeview) and guess what? They halved my subscription to 14 a month and I still get sky plus. they did it by getting rid of the channels that I never watch - the cookery, history channels.
This lasts for 6 months but i can cancel it at any time.
Lordy. Very good for me, and just shows how companies are trying to hold on to us all in these credit crunchy times.
thanks for all the help anyway.
cheers
