(2-part post):

Apart from the sports service, Setanta, and a few 'adult' channels, the only subscription service available on digital terrestrial TV is the one operated by TopUp TV.

The original TopUp TV service offered extra channels, such as UKTV Gold, by simply inserting a valid viewing card into the slot on a suitable Freeview box. This service has now been discontinued for new customers.

TopUp TV has now changed to become an 'on demand' service. There are no fixed transmission times for their programmes. Instead, each day you get to select from a range of programmes which are available for viewing throughout that day, at whatever time you choose. I have to admit to being confused about whether UKTV still carries G.O.L.D. (which is the new name for UKTV Gold). There are no programmes listed on that link but this page states that the channel is among those that they draw programmes from:
http://www.topuptv.com/anytime/index.html
(That's no surprise. TopUp TV have always been pathetic at explaining their system). Maybe it's still available 'as transmitted', rather than 'on demand', or maybe it's gone forever. If you're interested in TopUp TV I recommend phoning them for accurate information. (Even G.O.L.D.'s web pages seem confused. One page states that you can get their programmes on TopUp TV's channel 17. Another states that they're on Channel 26. It's not clear whether they're only available to the few remaining users of the 'old' TopUp TV 'card in the slot' system, or whether new subscribers can receive them).

To get TopUp TV you now need a special Freeview box, which will cost you either £89.99 or £99.99. These boxes are also PVRs, which allow you to record programmes. See here:
