Freezing tv

I purchased a flat screen tv thingy a few month back. The screen keeps freezing. It did it once or twice a week now it does it every day. What is the problem? And can I cure it?? Regards.

It's almost certainly insufficient signal strength from your aerial. Different makes and models of TV have different 'sensitivities'. Your old set might have functioned perfectly well with a fairly weak signal but your new one can't cope. The strength of the signal received by your aerial is affected by such things as the heights of various layers of the ionosphere (which vary with the seasons), solar flares on the surface of the sun and local weather conditions. (A combination of such changes could easily account for the recent increased incidence of screen freezes on your TV).

First, step outside and check that your aerial is still properly aligned. (Sometimes high winds can knock aerials out of alignment. You won't get a good signal if it's pointing straight up or down!). Assuming that you can't identify any alignment problems, you need to to upgrade your aerial system (i.e. the aerial and the cable).

This aerial has been frequently recommended by AB contributors:

PS: You might be able to get a sufficient increase in signal strength by using a cheap signal booster but I wouldn't rely on it producing a good enough signal in poor weather conditions (e.g. heavy rain or snow)

Phew!! Very technical indeed. Thanks very much for that. However, my fault! I should have said I`m on virgin cable. Cheers.

if you're on cable, those channels are almost certainly analogue and should bypass the DVB-T circuitry. try tunign in to a signal from an aerial. also, does the set freeze when watching a dvd or video tape?
