...I have an entry level smart phone on a 24 month contract with the Carphone Warehouse on Talkmobile. The contract ends next month and I'm looking at alternatives. My question is... If I bought a Sim free phone from Argos for example, would I have a new number and how would I transfer the data from my present phone to the new one.
Any help gratefully received.

If you switch provider, you can take your current phone number with you, so if, like me, you've had your number for a while and it would be inconvenient to change numbers, you just need to ask your current provider for a PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code). If you stay with your current provider and take a new (different) contract out, you can't port your number, so you have to change your number.
All explained here:

Transferring your data all depends on lots of variables .... how much data you're transferring, what kinds of phones you're transferring to and from, Bluetooth available on both phones ??
