Music Servers

I have got far too many CDs (according to my wife!) I understand that there are music servers on which can you can put CDs in and it will store the music. Anyone got one and are they any good? Also how many CDs can be stored on them. Thank you.

How would that reduce the number of CDs you have?

I can store them in the attic and have the music on the server

Yep that's right
I'd guess Aytee is planning to store the CDs in a less obtrusive place, rather than somewhere they need to be easily accessible, I have a pretty extensive CD collection that lives in a box in a cupboard because the first (only) thing I do with any CD I buy is rip it to MP3 and then it's put away.

The one thing I will point out to Aytee is, information like track names, artist, album names and so on are not stored on the CD so it either needs to be downloaded from the internet whenever you "rip" a CD, or if it's an obscure CD you'll need to enter the information yourself. This can make transferring a large collection onto any digital media system a huge task because it has to be done right if you want a usable digital collection.

Anyhow.... one important question.... do you want a music server that allows music to be played all over the house, or a music player (that only plays in one room)?

Gingejbee - that is exactly what I am looking for. Chuckfickens - yes it does seem a long winded to have to put all the information on. I'll have to look into that. Thanks very much

Chuck - the one suggested by Gingejbee apparently will take all the info off the CD except rare ones. Thanks for all your help.
"apparently will take all the info off the CD except rare ones."

Believe me, the info is not on the CD, it uses a database of CDs which is nowhere near complete (or even accurate in some cases) and has to kept updated (at your cost I believe)

This is an alternative to the Brennan unit. I have no knowledge of either.

Methinks you should checkout all that iTunes has to offer...
I've recently acquired a Brennan JB7 and I've loaded 125 cds on it and still have 287Gb free on the hard disk. It shows both the artists name and track name when playing through the Celestion speakers I have connected. You can search for tracks or albums and find anything you want in no time at all and it sounds very good too! Definitely the best bit of gear I've bought recently and that includes the Bose wave system (which is brilliant in a different way)

I have a Sony Gigajuke with an 80gb hard drive http://www.play.com/E...i-System/Product.html
They seem to be unavailable at the moment but I'm sure Sony have a replacement if you look about.
It has built in labelling for 350,000 albums and the facility for you to rip the cd on your computer and access an even greater database.
Very good sound quality but I must admit I've fitted better quality speakers and speaker cables.
