DVD / Home Theatre has gone bang!

I have an LG blu ray player with a 2:1 speaker system. It's literally just out of guarantee, and last week it made a couple of loud bangs and pops when I turned it on. It is now dead other than a blue ring illuminated volume button. There was also an awful - liniment / electronic type smell afterwards that stank out the room.

As there is no function at all at the moment (won't eject or respond to any other button pressing)I'm assuming it's had it and I will have to get another player. Does that sound right?

Also, if so, could I make use of the 2:1 speakers (with bare cable type ends rather that phono plugs) with a new DVD player. I'm slightly reluctant to spend another two or three hundred for a "home theatre kit".
Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

These guys might be able to help. http://www.avforums.com/
approach the store where you bought it and ask for a replacement/repair. look at the sales of goods act to be sure of your specific rights as a consumer. it sounds completely toasted......good luck x

I agree. Even if it is out of guarantee you have a claim as you would expect an appliance to last more than 13 months. The 12 month guarantee is not a legal limit. You still have consumers rights. If no joy at the shop politely tell them you are going to trading standards. If it is a major retailer you should have no prob.
