I use Jabra headsets at work...

In fact, I use these exact ones...

I would recommend something like this between your PC and headphones – you will then have enough power for the most hard of hearing.

You will also not need to worry about the sensitivity of any headphones used with your PC.

I have something similar on my PC – the volume control is at 1/10 and it is very loud. Turn to full volume and my headphones would be toast.

My active speakers (although a cheap pair) have bass/treble controls, allowing tonal adjustment for the sound source and headphones – but this feature appears very rare on PC speakers.
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000.

These have a USB connection which not only makes them very easy to connect but generally provides a much better quality of sound than the built in audio processor.

They are also very comfortable.

For Skype you really should use a headset with a mic as this gives a much better performance for the other person too.

thank you all, beso,I almost bought those exact ones you specify but thought would wait until I received some replies.
Now,my problem is...which shall I buy...both sound very good...will probably buy the speakers, handy to have.
I would suggest you buy the speakers first and see how they perform with the headphones you already have – if they turn out to be useless, you will only have lost £3.89.
