How to format my external disk drive

How do I format my new external disk drive for my tv?

I was told to do this on my pc. Means nothing to me, but has to be fat32?

Can someone point me in the direction of the free download I need?

I am not familiar with that but I believe it will have a utility to format disks so you will not need anything else.
If you keep an eye on this post someone more knowledgeable will come along to help you.

You've not said what size drive it is, which does make a difference, but assuming it's above 32GB in size (which it almost certainly is) then you'd need to use something like the following to format it as FAT32...

All later versions of windows have a (artificial) limit of 32GB for formatting as FAT32, there is no technical reason for this limit, it's just that MS want people to use a later file system (NTFS) on large (above 32GB) drives so they built the format limit into windows (which is a real pain!)
