Sony Trinitron

Hi guys.....I know I am probably asking an obvious question....but I am a girl! I have a Sony Trinitron TV, its approx 10 years old.....the last few days when you switch it on, it crackles and makes the screen crackle in time with the sound of the crackling!
This isn't good is it? Is it about the explode? Mind you, yesterday, for example, it never made a crackle, not once.....but this morning it is going mad, so I turned it off.
It did this about three years ago, maybe for a couple of weeks and then stopped.....now its started again......is there anything that can be done to repair it? It'a just these days things seem to be disposable...thiking about it....not sure where I have seen a TV repair man anymore! Help please, don't have the money to replace it at the moment???!!!!

It is almost certainly beyond economic repair. Second-hand CRT TVs can be had on ebay for very little money. If you sort by ‘Distance: nearest first’ – you should fined something equivalent to replace your TV within a 10 mile radius for less than £20.
Or try some where like freecycle and you'll probably get one free, I've taken 3 CRT tvs to the dump in the last year because I couldn't give them away!
Hi PP,

Almost certainly beyond economical repair for sure.......why not try maybe the "Friday ad" website for your area, go to "TV's", or classifieds in local paper even and see if you can pick up a bargain that would do you until you have enough to replace it.

Charity stores that sell furniture also have old style TVs very reasonably. I bought a large Sony TV for £20 from British Heart Foundation over a year ago and it's been great.

As far as the noise is concerned, you would have to get someone out to look at it to be sure of the casue, which would cost more than buying a second hand replacement. However, I suspect that it is not likely to blow up, probably components heating and cooling inside, but better to be safe than sorry!
How confident are you about taking the back off it and giving it a good going over with vacuum cleaner?
That would be my first thought. If that doesn't help probably uneconomic repair.

Thanks everyone.....I suspected it wasn't good....it was going crazy this morning and then after its been on half an hour or so....its fine! But I guess it has had its day.....thanks again
Sony main power switches go down .. pretty popular.
If it buzzes again, try clicking the on/off power switch a few times.
It sounds like the tube anode connection is arcing, due to dust/moisture. Try putting a fan pointing at the air vents to dry the crt out. It will only work again until the inside stays dry.

It really need cleaning inside. Removing the lead from the tube requires extreme caution as it can give you a nasty kick, even long after the power has been disconnected. Really a job for a techy as it should be shorted before removal.

As has been said, not worth fixing unless you know someone who can do this so a good excuse to treat yourself to a HD LCD TV.
