New Lumix Cmera - help please!

I have just cbought a new Lumix but cannot understand one thing despite hours of setting it up from the manual!
After taking about 12 photos at high definition it comes up with the message 'memoery full'. This is no good.
There is a slot next to the battery for a card and the manual says I can buy a SD (8MB to 2GB) or a SDHC (4GB,8GB,16GB) and presumably if I do and put the card in can I then set the camera (how) to read everything to the card instead of the internal memory and will this enable me to save say 50 or more photos at a time?
Please explain in simple terms how I go about all this.

It would help to know the model of the camera...

Put a card in it, it will save to the card automatically.

for the amount of pictures each card size will roughly hold....

1GB: 23 pics
2GB: 47
4GB: 95
8GB: 190
16GB: 381
32GB: 762

oppps, sorry, that was the amount if you set it to uncompressed pictures, for compressed JPEGs (the normal setting) it will be

1GB: 238
2GB: 476
4GB: 953
8GB: 1907
16GB: 3814
32GB: 7629

Most cameras come with very small built in memory and you always have to buy and install a memory card to take more than the dozen or so photos the built in memory takes.

Put card in. The higher the gb number the more pics. Go to menu and there will be a seetting to save to card that you choose. You can also copy from memory to card or vice versa.

I have a 2 gb card and will never fill it on a typical holiday. You will get hundreds on a card, not just 50!
