Shared printer

Hi,
I live in a house with a shared pc & printer (my pc & printer) which I don't mind other people using, but as I am the only one who ever replaces the print carrtridges is there a way of putting a password to the printer before it can be used.

You cant have it both ways

On the one hand you say you dont mind them using the printer.

But then you seem to begrudge the fact only you buy the cartridges.

Either stop them using the PC/printer, or ask them for £10 each every so often.

Technically there is no easy way to do this but nevertheless don't you think it is a bit of an underhand thing to do as the people who use it will just be hit with a password and know that you have put it on there. Just ask them to chip in whatever percentage they use the printer for next time, maybe 30% of the cost or something.

Some printers can do it but generally these all connect via an Ethernet port. Your average houshold printer does not. An alternative is to disable the USB port in Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.

Another idea woud be to fit a USB header to the computer. Don't connect it internally and plug the printer into it when you aren't using it. Fortunately freeloader types are so lazy and stupid they rarely work out what is wrong.

Otherwise get used to it. The world is mostly populated by people who use and contriibute very little.
I once live in a community that propounded the philosophy: "To each according to their needs and from each according to their ability". It simply encouraged the needy and useless. Don't bother trying to shame them into it because they have no shame since they believe they are specially entitled.

It can easily be done if each user has their own login for the computer.

Go into control panel, right click on the printer, select properties and then click on the security tab, remove everthing from under "group and user names" except for the user you want to be able to print (if the user name isn't there already click add and add it)

Once thats done click OK and only the user name specified will be able to print to that printer.

If each user has the same login your stuffed, it can't be done
