iPod touch won't accept all my songs.

I had an iPod classic and purchased a couple of albums here n there. Now when i connect up my more recent iPod touch to the same itunes it will not sync the purchased songs, and when i view them in my itunes library they have an exclamation mark next to them. is it because the classic and touch are not compatible with the songs? I have tried all sorts of ways of sync'ing the ipod touch but cannot get all the music onto it from my library..................starting to get frustrated with it. Can anyone help me pleeeeease?

My classic is an 80gb and the ipod touch is only 8gb but there is still free space on it (about 2gb).
