I dont wish to alarm you, but I think this is quite serious.

The "registry" is a VERY important Windows file that keeps track of your whole Windows system. Every program that is installed on Windows updates the registry with information about itself.

It seems your registry has become corrupt and there is a danger that your Windows will stop working.

The first thing I would do is rescue ANY files on your PC that you want to keep (personal files etc) and put them on a CD or DVD, or on a memory stick.

Once you hjave done that, IF the computer stops working then at least you have your files backed up.

Here is a support page from Microsoft about the C0000218 error

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830084

As you can see, they say it is quite serious, and may even be that the hard disk is damaged.

Here is someone else who talks about the error

http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20050821 _stop_c0000218_registry_file_failure.html

Here is a support page from Microsoft about registry problems, but it is VERY complex and you may need technical help to understand it.

Windows keeps a list of all the important messages in a file, and it may be that there is some useful information there (such as reports of major disk errors).

If you have XP then do as follows:

Open the Windows Control Panel, and then chose "Performance and Maintenance"

You should see an icon for Administrative Tools. Click on it. The Administrative Tools window opens.

There is an icon for Event Viewer. Double click on it and the Event Viewer window opens.

On the left hand side click on System, The right hand frame should list all your system errors (newest at the top).

Are there lots of Red Crosses with "Error" against them ?

Double click on the "row" with the error on it and a window opens saying what the error is.

You can use the arrows in the top right to step up and down through the errors.

Here is a picture of the Event Viewer window so you know what it looks like.

Lan adapter?

is it usb? have the drivers been installed for the adpter?
in device manager are there any yellow exclamation marks
these need sorting install drivers accordingly!

if you are getting a blank page for the internet
you may need to rectify the above first making sure the lan adapter is installed correctly

sometimes after a recovery lan and associated adapters fail....... its a microsoft thing!!!!!!

if you need an IP address please give more details as to the error if tha above is not the issue
