I have tried to use microsoft resolution KB319095 to correct the issue re the missing volume icon on my xp home edition pc.
I have followed the instructions on it placing the xp cd rom in the pc making sure it does not open up fully, i then type on the command prompt following the instructions given.....it gives another error message on the command prompt...
** cd rom is not recognised as an internal or external command operable program or batch file **
Can anyone please help

that means you have typed cd rom at the command prompt... thats not a command

where it says cd-rom drive: if you read the instructions it says this means to put the drive letter of your cd drive with the xp disk in.

if you open up my computer you will see all your drives listed there, your cd drive will be something like letter d or e so at the command prompt type

d: or e: depending on the driver letter and hit enter then followed by the rest of the instructions

I think its d
copy and paste the line below into the run box (start menu > run)

highlight the entire line below by dragging the mouse over it while holding down the left button press ctrl + C to copy it then open the run box and press ctrl + v to paste it into the run box then press enter

expand d:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Chuck seems to have put the kettle on
if your CD is d
either type the following 3 lines
or
highlight the following 4 lines between (not including) the ********s
right click and choose copy

open a command prompt
right click on the flashing _ and chose paste
press enter ... and that should be it

****************************************
f:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

*****************************************
damn .... sorry ... my cd is f:

you should type or copy the following (between the ***s)

****************************************
d:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

*****************************************
is the expand command on the cd then... been a long time since I've repaired windows :)

Oh and think you meant d: not f:, assume that was a typo, as AC said then but

*********************************
d:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

**********************************
hehe
