Creating Raid 1 With Ubuntu 16.04

I bought two HDDs of same capacity and popped them into an external enclosure, on which one can choose operational mode (RAID or simply two independent storage media).
_I wish to have several partitions on this HDD-mirrored back-up. But how?!
_Would it suffice to partition HDD1 (sdc, for instance) and assume that the configured RAID 1 will repeat/mirror on HDD2 (sdd) automatically? Thank you.
