Having most of my audio on minidiscs, and because minidiscs are now defunct, I want to get all the audio re-recorded in MP3 format using AUDACITY. However, when playing the minidiscs, I can`t seem to get the audio through to my PC. I`m using a cable with 2 - 3.5 stereo jacks from the audio out on the minidisc player to the mic in on my PC. (Packard Bell Easynote TS), but with no response whatever. I`ve checked the leads I`m using and they`re all OK. Does the mic in socket have to be enabled in any way? I`ve tried an actual mic in it but no response.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Try going into Control Panel > sound > recording to see if your microphone socket is live.
Alternatively, right-click on the speaker icon (bottom right). Select Properties. Look under Device Usage to check that the microphone socket is enabled. Click the Levels tab to check the input level. If you change anything, click the Apply button (not just OK).

(Also check Line In, as well as Microphone, in case that's actually the socket you're using - which would be better anyway if such a socket is available).
PS: In Audacity, ensure that the correct recording device is selected:

I didn't know about that shortcut Buenchico - thanks.
