Depends on the speed of your broadband and how long you've had the pc. The older it is, the more updates it needs to do.
Earlier this week I had to restore my PC to an earlier setting from a backup on the PC Itself. No internet involved (one of the reasons I had to do it was the machine refused to hook up to the internet).

I'd had it running for two and a half hours before bedtime and it was still happily chugging away. It was completed by the morning so it took somewhere between two and a half and nine hours.

Yet another failure courtesy of our friends at Microsoft. All I was doing was looking a few websites and e-Mails. Over it went:

"Failure to Connect to a Windows service. Windows couldn't connect to the Group Policy Client Service.." and another five or six lines of drivel.

Windows 8 is prone to such failures (this is the third I have suffered) and is not fit for purpose.
If you have windows 7 or 8 and don't want to upgrade to 10, just download the updates and review before installing (there is an option to do this). There are a handful that will "nag" to update to windows 10. Search on net to find what these are...don't have time here.
What OS are you using if it is Windows 7 there are 216 updates so far and more to come when Microsoft releases their monthly updates on Tuesday of each month
