Me again, apologies!
Now have a message that keeps appearing on start up stating that a "part of Windows, the Group Policy Client Service" is not operating - or words to that effect. Any advice please ?? Tearing my hair out ! (Or what's left of it !)

It's for Windows 8 but is it any use ? It was near the top of the websearch.
Actually re-reading it, it's for both 8 and 10.
This error is has been associated with a failed windows update. Mine updated yesterday so it’s possible, the best thing to try is a System Restore to sometime prior to the error and then see if windows updates correctly but first it might be worth trying
Click on Search (Magnifying glass next to Windows start icon) enter cmd right click and choose Run as Administrator type: “netsh” then type: “winsock reset” you will then be asked to restart your computer
If these does not work it could require editing the system registry

Hi NS
Thanks again for your reply. However, I don't have a "magnifying glass" next to my start button and am having trouble finding the correct search box.

if its to do with a failed windows update just go to Windows/softwaredistribution/download and delete everything in that folder and hit the windows update button again.

You can only access the Group Policy Client Service and edit it if you have the Professional or Enterprise versions of Windows 10. To fix it you will have to use the Rest This PC and reinstall the operating system . You a few options in doing this one is where you keep all of your files and only repair Windows .
