From today, July 29th, Microsoft is giving a free Windows 10 upgrade to users of Windows 7 and 8. This offer is open for 12 months.

Windows 10 gets great reviews, but so did Vista and Win 8, both of which are now widely agreed to be dogs.

I've got Win 7 Ultimate, which isn't bad, so will wait and see for a while.

Mrs V has Win 8, so I'm going to upgrade in a few weeks after checking initial reactions - nothing can be worse than Win 8!

What are other Abers doing.

What are you doing Ab Editor , on your little concrete computer?

Ihave it reserved but will not download 'till I have seen it..I have no gripes with win 8.1
From what I can see the only major step forward is Cortana. And that won't work on a PC without a microphone. Oh, and Hololens headsets. Microsoft have fallen way behind other software platforms and seem to have no alternative but to offer it (and upgrades) for free.

There are two separate battles here -

PCs, where Windows are dominant, Win 7 and XP have 75% market share, Mac OS has 4.5%, all other non- Windows have 4.87% https://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0

Today's battle is for tablets and smartphones, which Win 8 was deigned for, and where Apple and Android systems dominate, and Windows have a tiny share of the market. They have lost this battle
well I have a windows update pending, the little icon with the orbital ring has come on this morning - don't know what that is...
I have registered my interest for it, I don't like Windows 8.1 so anything will be better.

I was hoping that it would install itself - if there is so to be more than the most basic of work for me then it is destined to fail.

I bought a second hand win 7 PC for £60 as a spare machine just to play with the win 10 upgrade. I will not be doing it for a few weeks though.
Venator, if they've lost the battle, why are they launching 10?
I've reserved it but have been advised to "wait and see" before installing it. Let any teething problems be sorted out first.
I'm looking to buy a laptop in the next few days. Will I be offered the Windows 10 upgrade does anyone know?
Buy a macbook, rocky.

It will integrate seamlessly with your iPad and iPhone - and will 'just work' rather than the endless battles to keep a windows machine free of malware and running at a sensible speed.

Vacs-master - Apple 40% market share on phone / tablet, Android 51% Windows phone 2.2%. That's losing in my book

Morning venator. we touched on this yesterday, and the general AG take on it seemed to be wait a while and let any glitches get sorted but we were in general looking forward to it. You will have problems trying to download and run it on old kit. I think hypo is pretty teched up on the specs req. If your windows 8 is showing the windows logo and the message get windows 10 it should mean that Microsoft have scanned it for suitability and driver compatibility.
I wish I could afford a Macbook Dave. I was having a play in the Apple store yesterday, they're fantastic machines.
2% could be seen as just starting to make inroads. In an existing market there will always be incumbents. But IMO anyone who wants to serve more than one market needs to ensure they don't have a one size fits none solution. One needs compatibility of data, equivalent functionality but what one tolerates on a mobile or pad is not cutting any ice on a PC where a degree of professional user interface is desirable. and the PC is more likely to have resources than a smaller device too, so the compromises will be different.

And no, no chance on upgrading my Win7 yet. If at all.
I cant find anywhere to download it, everything says "page no found" does anybody have a ling that goes to the actual download page? or maybe you can only get it if previously reserved?

I asked a geek exactly that

is WIn 10 out because the previous ones were dogs
and he took the view that WIn 10 is BETTER

and you CAN elect to use the suystem on it that you are used to
Ratter, you should see a Windows icon in the bottom right, near the clock
No Icon for me and I have Service pack 1.
RATTER15 when Microsoft offered you the free upgrade did you refuse it? I think all windows 8.1 users were automatically offered the upgrade some months ago
