Have recently purchased an external drive for my desk top computer due to the fact that my one and only DVD drive has packed up.

My problem is the DVD dive I have purchased appears to only want to read and play CD/RW discs and will not read DVD/RW discs I am assured by the suppliers that it should read these although they have heard of this problem which would suggest that it is something within my own computer set up which is preventing them being read I am running Windows 7 with an Intel pentium 4 processor can anyone suggest an answer to solve this please?

You may have to go to the manufacturers support website to d/l and install the drivers. If you plugged it in and allowed Windows to install the drivers, then you probably have only the 'generic' (basic) drivers installed.
We need more info on the drive eg, make and model. Your description says DVD drive, CD burner, so it may read/write CDs but only read DVDs (such drives do exist). I understand that the lasers which write the discs are a different frequency for CDs, DVDs and RWs, so yours may not deal with DVD-RWs (it needs to be able to write DVD RWs in order to be able to read them).

I'm afraid I cant supply very much more than what I've alredy said, it was a very very cheap drive supplied through Amazon via a firm called Nestling it only cost £9.90 but as I do not use them very oftern thought I would give it a try

This is how it is described on the Amazon webb site:- I d0 not have the makers name or address and all it says on the drive is made in china. Sorry about scaqcity of info.

I suggest you take it back and buy something like this, and for only £15.54 including P&P you can't go wrong.

Not tried it myself but the write-ups sound good.

Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
The Amazon link could be useful but reading the description you've provided I think it will only write CDs, not DVDs.
AOG's suggestion sounds good.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me with this problem it looks as though I will have to live with it and use cd/RW. Will leave my problem open in case anyone can suggest something else.
