My grandson gave my laptop a good cleaning out but now after having put it back together the touchpad and keypad do not function, could this just be that he has not put wires in correct place.Laptop works otherwise.

has the touchpad on/off key been turned to off?
Question Author
How would they be turned off and how do we turn it on.where will the button be.When looked in control panel(used a wireless mouse )on the "mouse" setting ,the icon to test speed is "hazy" and a folder showing.Do Keyboard and touchpad work simutainously?
Sometimes the touchpad is turned on/off with a button close to it. sometimes it's on one of the Function keys - hold down the Fn key and press one of the keys on the top of the keyboard (has an icon meant to look like the touchpad).
it depends on the model, on my acer it's Fn key + F7
Look for a key marked Fn and note what colour the lettering is in. Then look for a key that has a touchpad symbol on it. It will probably be in the same colour as 'Fn' and it's most probably on one of the 'F' keys across the top of your keyboard. The symbol might look rather like this:

Then press Fn and the key with the touchpad symbol simultaneously. (That toggles the touchpad on and off).

If that doesn't work it's likely that (as you suspected) there might be a loose connection but please tell us the make and exact model of your laptop anyway.
If, as you imply, he opened it up to give it a good going over, then it seems possible to me some contact has been lost. Only way to check is to open it again and identify how that contact is intended to be made and whether it's doing so. Plus give it all a "once over" trying to spot other possible problems. Unsure why one needs to open a laptop to clean it though.

Cannot see a key that looks like a touchpad, there is f4 with a rectangle shape on it but have tried fn +that key, nothing. The laptop s HP Pavillion
Could we also establish exactly what it is that isn't working?

Everyone (including me) seems to have concentrated on the touchpad but the title of the question also includes 'keyboard'. (Somewhat confusingly, that becomes 'keypad' in the main text. If it wasn't a laptop I'd take that to mean a numeric keypad, rather than the whole keyboard but, as most laptops don't have one, I'm not so sure!).

If absolutely nothing that you can press, click or move your finger over is working, I'd suggest that it's almost certainly a connection fault.

yes buenchico,I think he has not reconnected the correct wire ...will give it back to him after. He could not try it as he does not have my password ,in this case it is a" fingerprint " password. My grandaughter sent her`s to a pro and when it came back, did not work,...he had left a wire disconnected.
On my HP Pavillion laptop it's a button just above the touchpad.
I refer to the last sentence of your original posting and ask...."How are you able to say that, without the Touchpad and Keyboard, the laptop works otherwise."

Incidentally have you sorted-out your Broadband.?

Hans.

Not sure why this lad opened the ruddy thing up to clean it in the first place, so I am not at all surprised that its not working now !
Question Author
he did his own and it worked a treat after...it was full of dust
There is a lot of dust under my wardrobe but all my clothes still fit kloofnek !

Seriously, it might be that a plug has been left unconnected, or not put back completely. Please let us know how this continuing story pans out !
