First of all- is it a trustworth source?
Does it say what format the attachment is in?

i wouldn't open any attachments to emails unless i was sure of the source
How are you accessing your emails, via a webmail site or using an email program on your pc?
I suspect it may depend on your e-mail client. And your AV may be stopping them being opened to protect you. I think we'd need more info on what you have, what you've tried and so forth.
If you can't view attachments (and there's no security message about them being deleted because they contain malware) the most likely cause is either that
(a) your computer hasn't got a suitable program (e.g. someone has emailed you an Excel spreadsheet and you've not got Excel, or a compatible program, on your computer) ; or
(b) your computer has lost the 'file association' which tells it which program to use to open the files.

So what's the file extension (e.g. .doc, .docx, .xls, .ppt or .jpg) on the end of the file names of the troublesome attachments?

Further, what happens when you try to open the attachments?
I am 100% with aelmpvw who has said..."I wouldn't open any attachments to emails, unless I was sure of the source".

Perhaps your AV software is doing you a favour and preventing your opening the attachments which might contain viruses. (or should that read...Viri )

Tell us, are the actual e/mails from trustworthy sources.? It might also help if, as indicated by SlackAlice and Old_Geezer, we knew what E/mail programme you are using.

Hans.

@factor-fiction....Sorry for having overlooked your posting which was the first and is very relevant.

The ball is now in the court for 1944screen to hit back to us.

Hans.

Viruses is correct as virus is not a Latin word, but is derived from Greek and Sanskrit.
@Jackdaw33....My thanks to you for having explained that 'viruses' is the plural of 'virus' and I apologise to the OP for my having caused a minor digression within his thread.

Hans.
Please be careful about opening email attachments even if the source is from someone you know. The senders computer might have been compromised by a virus. Scan attachments with an anti-virus program before opening if you really want to see what it is. To be honest, unless it's a picture file (jpg, gif etc yes I know even these can be unsafe) I'd contact the sender and would not bother opening. Also be wary of clicking on links in emails as well.
