I have a Samsung Tv and a Panasonic blu ray player with external speakers, the sounds come through the speakers when I play a disc but not when the tv is playing, they are connected via a hdmi cable through the arc slot and I also have a audio cable, would I get sound through the external speakers if I purchased an optical audio cable?

Technology is growing quicker than my brain capacity I am afraid, any advice would be appreciated

Really depends on how you get sound to the speakers.

I have all HDMI leads from players, set top box, etc, go to the TV, the audio out of my TV (optical) connected to the audio in of my amp that drives the speakers. That way whatever is on the screen is providing the audio to the speakers.

I havent got an amp just the bluray player with speakers, having re read the manual it seems that a digital audio cable will do the trick.
Thanks
