Web Page Width

When I start to make a web page I find the new blank page covers about 3/4 the width of the screen to the left side, and I cannot find how to make it cover the whole width. If I add pictures, text etc centred on the new blank page it leads to a website that displays left of centre. On the other hand if I ignore the page width at the preparatory stage and centre the web content on my own PC screen the result appears normal and centralised. Any ideas please what I should do to get a full width page to start with? I've looked at Page Set-up which shows standard 800 x 600.

To help others who might post here, please tell us which program you're using to design your website.

You need to remember that any website will display somewhat differently on each visitor's computer (depending upon their screen resolution and choice of browser). You should either use 'liquid page design' or select a width of (perhaps) 960.

Tank you Chris, I'll study the link you have given. In the meantime you will probably not be impressed to know that I use MS Publisher to create my web pages! It is an old version 11.0.5525.0 that I've used for several years without problems, but it is the only one I know. I'll try the width you suggest and and do a few more experiments. Have other commitments today but will come back later.

Coldicote, I'd really advise you not to learn web page production using publisher. It will work but is so unlike 'real' web page production that it will really only serve to get your hopes up before disappointing you and costing you a lot of time.
If you seriously need to learn about web pages production and html / xml code, you need to use a 'proper' program - Dreamweaver (expensive), Aptana (complex) Serif (OK).
But if you need to simply make web pages for a purpose and not become a webmaster nerd, use google websites, or a free blogger type site.
Even if and when you buy webspace from a web hosting firm, they all provide very good free customisable templates nowadays, and the control of website production for most hobbyists is quite simple without needing to buy special programs.

Hello again. I find that a web page width of 1000px just fills my screen and am experimenting, but it remain to be seen how it appears to others. Here is a single page example:

Mosaic, thank you for you suggestions for 'proper' programs. I will look further at the possibilities. I learnt MS Publisher at local evening classes so have tended to stay with it, but no harm in trying something else.

That's too wide for me. (1024 x 768 resolution, with Firefox 12). The tail of the right-hand bird just touches the scroll bar on the right of my screen. I have to use the horizontal scroll bar to see the right-hand border.

Sorry about that Chris. I've re-uploaded the same thing based on 960px width (the measure you suggested). Appears a little left of centre on my own screen - hope it's better on yours. I'm waiting for replies from other contacts. As you say, websites will display differently on other visitors' computers.

That's better. No horizontal scroll bar now. Your leafy border isn't centred, but it wasn't (even allowing for the scrolling) before anyway.
