'programme not responding' message

my computer keeps telling me the following message: 'this programme is not responding' - is there a way to fix this? all suggestions gratefully received.

Windows Media Player

Hi I am having a problem viewing DVD's on media player. I have sound but no picture. When on task manager is says programme is not responding. I also have a problem when trying to watch BBCi player....
