Keep getting an icon on my screen which says - hs_err_pid4200 - and when i open it the first line is thus:

# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment

Anybody any ideas what it is and why I'm getting it please?

I don't have enough expertise to comment on this exact error message, but I'd have thought your first action would be to update the java on your PC to the latest version. (Unless you have deliberately tried to remove it.)

Probably find the updates on the Sun website somewhere.
First thing I'd do is remove java all together from add remove programs (or programs and features) in the control panel.

There is a pretty good chance you don't need it at all and therefore won't miss not having it, but if you find later that something you use won't work saying that java is required download and install it again.

(you'd need the one called "jre-7u1-windows-i586-s.exe"

Thank you both, have removed it and reinstalled it, hopefully that will sort the problem.
