What is brccmctl?

After many fruitless attempts I am still trying to install Adobe 10 Flash Player. I am ploughing my way through the long list of Adobe instructions on how to solve the problem and am told that I have to close certain applications. I have closed them all except one called brccmctl. What on earth is that?

It's a printer monitor for Brother Printers.
There's possible an icon in your system tray that will allow you to close it, failing which you should be able to close it by going to the Processes page in Task Manager, highlighting it, and clicking End Process.

Go to the Adobe page and download the installer maybe?
If it still plays up .. download the UN-installer .. run that reboot and run latest installer again.
