Programs won't load

I have been using Windows 7 on netbook for a while but a couple of days ago, just having allowed a new windows update, it just started refusing to load programs that I use all the time: Vodafone Mobile Connect, Goggle Chrome, Libre Office, Irfanview ...

Opening Task Manager processes tab shows these programs start loading - but only about 1Mb before they stop. And I can have any number of the same program attempts but all stopping at the same point.

I have disabled as many processes as I safely can, run virus and malware checks etc, cleaned up "junk" files, cleaned the registry and defragged etc. (using Iobit Advanced System Care) but to no avail.

I attempted to reset the machine to an earlier restoration point when things were running smoothly but that hasn't solved the problem.

Any suggestions?

(Meanwhile I have had to buy another laptop - with fast dual core, 64-bit Home Premium and plenty of RAM, it's as fast as my well tuned XP machine used to be - but who needs a Ferrari to go to the shops?)

Go to the update section in your control panel at the System and Security section open up your installed updates and uninstall the bad one. You could try first to repair the update by typing in the search section of the start panel troubleshooting and scrolling down to windows update and clicking on repair updates any corrupt ones will be repaired.

I don't know whether it was because of the update or that was a coincidence.
But I couldn't do a repair because I couldn't run the program to connect to the internet.
And my restore to just before the update should have had the same effect as removing that update?
II think I'm going to have to reformat hard drive and reinstall operating system. Seriously thinking of Ubuntu or even reverting to XP!
