So...South Africa is named as host of the 2010 World Cup, and almost immediately some people voiced concerns about security and the threat of violence. However, it all seems to have gone quite smoothly....with the biggest news story being about the vuvuzelas.

In fact, it looks like it's been a bit of a success.

So what happened?

How come South Africa pull it off, and does this mean that we should now start looking at the country in a more positive light?

The cynical side of me says that not all the news that happened there was reported.
I'm with SB..
yes congrats to SA, I was one of those worried. I'm delighted I was wrong.
It's probable that there was a massive police presence around the supporters to protect them from violence and robbery.
The everyday crime likely went on unreported.
All the pre-World Cup fears were based on South Africa's track record, are you saying that there should have been nothing to fear?

Wasn't all plain sailing for some.
That bloke deserved all he got.
Agreed sq, He's invaded the pitch and ran towards the world cup and all the officials and heads of state behind it with a hat in his hand that could've been concealing a weapon. Lucky the tazers or guns never came out. All in all it seems that the world cup was not the blood bath slaughterhouse we were led to believe it would be.
given that there was an unprecedented number of journalists there, all of whom would be only too eager to report the slightest dropping of litter as evidence that Africa is ungovernable, it seems unlikely that crime was going unreported.
jno, my thought exactly
