Apparently to reduce friction burns Howard.
I understood that the water reduces friction in the astroturf thus making the ball travel faster.
The pitch is artificial grass. If you fell or slid along it you would get friction burns.
........and that too Euphemia,
I play football (don't laugh) regularly and on Astroturf a wet surface can make it much better

Why is the hockey being played on a plastic pitch?
It's played on an artificial pitch because it remains perfectly flat, whereas grass is churned up by players' studs and divot marks made by hockey sticks.
