I've got photos at home of Bobby Moore (1966 World Cup) and Ron Harris (1970 FA Cup) on the shoulders of their team-mates. Any idea when the tradition/ custom of carrying your captain ended? I don't remember seeing it for years.

Interesting!

A Google Images search for
"FA Cup Final" "shoulders"
finds plenty of earlier images but nothing, as far as I can see, after 1972:

Changing the search to look for "World Cup Final" takes us to nothing more recent than 1986 for football:

but also shows that the tradition persists (2015) for cricket:

Maybe the fragile wee flowers who play today are worried they'll hurt themselves if they lift heavy weights.
They do tend to fall over when the draught of a passing player catches them.
I remember when Arsenal won the League cup in 1992/93 season and Tony Adams and other players lifted up Steve Morrow, the player who had scored the winning goal.

But then they dropped him and he broke his arm.

He missed the rest of the season and the FA Cup final.

Maybe it stopped then.

Douglas pinched my actual answer. But looking at VHG's answer, I'll say that's just what I thought.
They're probably not allowed to do that anymore for health & safety reasons

When did the tradition of raising the cup to the crowd begin? When the winning captain collects the cup from the queen (or whoever) they always turn around and lift it in the air. I remember seeing some footage from 1946 of Derby County captain Jack Nicolas collecting the cup (from King George VI?), then proceeding away and back down the stairs towards the pitch. It looked very strange that he didn't raise the trophy towards the crowd
