Why do you believe in God?
He doesn't seem to be much in evidence over the past two thousand years, so why?

A fine answer jake, that was really what I was aiming at in the ‘science’ Q below, but of course – sadly - in a more convoluted manner than your concise approach above.
The logical argument that ‘I see birds’ is a relative misnomer when attempting a comparison to the emotional aspect of seeing birds. The logical ‘I see birds’ sounds almost programmed - as an automaton - devoid of substance, feeling and emotion. Factual yes, but then fact is not always the essence of emotion or believing.
Is this the periphery that separates us?

The question was not "Does God exist?". The question was "Why do you believe in God?"
I believe in God because he exists. How can you believe in something that does not exist. Can a mother believe in a child whom she has not even conceived? Answer is no, because that does not exist. So belief and existence of God are two related things.

He used to talk to Jews and Arabs a lot but he's been quiet for a long time. If he was yer Uncle you'd assume he was dead !!

Maybe he should put a few adds on prime-time TV just for the people who only beleive in the obvious.

I think we try to this answer the wrong way round. Instead of trying to prove there is a god we should all pose the question 'how did we all arrive here without the application of a higher more inteliigent being'.
Certainly not through accident or even evolution from a micro-organism. Almost perfection cannot come from randomness.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"
it took him 7 days .....but is original quote was 3 days

As I said, the question is not Does God exist? but ' Why do you believe in God'?' I would hazard a guess that the nearest we've come to a rational answer is Jake's - it's an emotional need. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.

People believe in God because they want simple answers and are too lazy to seek real truth.
Once you believe in God and clearly defined everlasting truth you don't have to think any more. Sadly vast numbers of ignoramuses populatre this planet and religion is the dominant paradigm.

If God is a pure creative source of endless love and we (humans) are part of that then really we should believe in ourselves but those who like to control others need the semblance of a figurehead, a leader to control those in need by taking everything away that their God is supposed to be about.
Words in books or from others mouths may guide us.
I believe in God as being part of me so when looking for answers to life, when I truthfully search my heart for well-being, I will now look to myself to provide the strength needed to carry on.Because no matter what anyone else tells you, only you can make the difference.

Sorry Naomi, that probably didn't answer your question either but I don't know much about the people in the Bible but I do understand that the God of that book seems to rule by oppression most of the time.
Why believe in that?

Hi Luna ... ditto to Theland.

I don't know whether I do, or don't. I'm not hugely into religion but it seems to work for thousands of people, so......

Man is a very small speck in the whole universe.
For this reason he gets frightened because he does not understand it all (life, the universe and everything).
He cannot believe that all this happened by accident. So he invents this character called "god" so he can package it all up nicely and stop worrying.
Of course, some nasty people see the opportunity to market this "god" in numerous ways, and insist that THEIR religion is better than someone else's, and that being the case we had better go and kill the people in the other religion.
So they use fear, torture, religious hatred and terror to ensure that their religion becomes the most powerful.
And all this in the name of some character man has invented - god.

Theland, I got to this bit ........
This booklet will explain why God calls atheists “fools.”
- and discovered that this man begins on the premise that God wrote the bible. Not exactly unbiased, scientific reseach, is it?

|

Yes, you have a point there, but he still raises some questions that demand a bit more thought other than simply writing us all off as religious nutters.
